Born from racing!

AMG was founded in 1967 as a racing engine development center by two former Mercedes-Benz engineers; Hans Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. The letters "AMG" stand for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach Germany, the birthplace of Hans Aufrecht. In 1971 AMG gained attention by building and racing a modified four door Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3 luxury car and placing second in the Twenty Four Hours of Spa, an endurance race held in Belgium at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.

AMG had fast become a high-profile purveyor of modified Mercedes-Benz Automobiles.  In 1990 Daimler-Benz AG and AMG signed a contract of cooperation allowing AMG to leverage Daimler-Benz's extensive dealer network and leading to commonly developed vehicles (the first one being the Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG, in 1993). On January 1st, 1999, Daimler-Benz AG acquired 51 percent of AMG shares, and AMG was renamed to Mercedes-AMG. On January 1st, 2005, Hans Aufrecht sold his remaining shares to Daimler-Benz AG.

Currently there are two arms of the AMG division. The first  is the vehicle and high-performance engine production, keeping with the AMG philosophy of "One Man, One Engine".  The second is the AMG Racing Teams such as the DTM (German Touring Car Masters), Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, as well as providing the safety cars for Formula 1 World Championship.

Mercedes-AMG is located in Affalterbach, Germany where craftsmanship is the hallmark of everything they do.  AMG's racing DNA coupled with Mercedes-Benz already high standards, makes Mercedes-Benz AMG automobiles some of the most sought-after vehicles on the planet.
